Principal Investigator
Lisa Beutler MD, PhD
Dr. Beutler was born and raised in Southern California. She moved to Davis, CA to attend UC Davis with the goal of becoming a veterinarian, but ultimately discovered her love of science and medicine when she started working part-time in a plant genetics lab and in a clinical laboratory.
After earning her BS in Genetics and taking a gap year studying the genetics of iron homeostasis at The Scripps Research Institute, she joined the MSTP (MD-PhD program) at the University of Washington where she earned her PhD in Dr. Richard Palmiter’s lab studying amphetamine-mediated behavior and learning in mice.
She completed an internal medicine residency and endocrinology fellowship at UCSF, where she began her study of gut-brain communication and appetite regulation as a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Zachary Knight’s lab. Through her diverse clinical and research experiences, Dr. Beutler has honed her passion for clinically relevant basic science investigation, patient care, and mentoring the next generation of physicians and scientists.
